It’s World Earth Day! Kingfisher Lighting are taking this opportunity to discuss the origins of this day, the ‘Planet vs. Plastic’ theme and of course Kingfisher’s sustainability work as part of accepting our corporate responsibility.
The Origins of World Earth Day
Dating back to 1970, World Earth Day is promoting the global movement for environmental change. It all started with American senator G. Nelson and D. Hayes who organised the day due to their growing concern of the deteriorating environment. It was inspired by the popularity of the student anti-war movement and aimed to raise awareness of air and water pollution.
Planet vs. Plastic
This year, the theme is Plastic and refers to how we should be eliminating single-use plastics for the sake of human and planetary health. The aim is to have a reduction of 60% on all plastics by 2040 and you can join the movement here - https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-2024/
The aim is to get people to act fast by signing The Global Plastics Treaty, encouraging them to reject fast fashion and support The Great Global Clean Up. You can find events near you by visiting https://www.earthday.org/campaign/cleanup/#map
