Located in the Cairngorms, otherwise known as the largest national park in the UK, Badenoch and Strathspey Hospital is one of the latest developments for NHS Highlands.
The site accommodates many services such as physio and occupational therapy alongside chemotherapy, ambulance facilities and midwife services. The hospital itself has 24 beds, 12 consultant/treatment rooms and a minor injuries unit.
The Project
NHS Highland and Hub North (Scotland) required an innovative lighting solution with 3-hour emergency capabilities for Badenoch and Strathspey. Thanks to our pre-existing relationship with G A Barnie, Elgin but also support from Rybka, M&E Consultants, Edinburgh and Oberland Architects, we were able to create a state-of-the-art lighting system meeting the client’s specification.
We used a combination of our emergency post top and wall mounted fittings to allow a safe passage throughout the site in case of a power outage. This will allow patients and staff a quick and easy route whilst leaving the premises.
By using both reflector-based luminaires and advanced LED technology fittings, we not only provided high performance but excellent efficiency enabling great cost savings across the entire site whilst retaining the architectural aesthetic.
The Solution
We provided post top luminaires, wall mounted fittings and ceiling recessed fixtures for the site. We combined Kingfisher and AEC products to provide the ultimate lighting experience.
ITALO – This sleek luminaire had the ideal performance around the site. We used both standard and emergency ITALO’s around the site. They were mainly placed along the roadways and the car parks as their STE-M and SO5 Optic provided the perfect distribution to these areas.
We also ensured we used emergency versions to provide light to the gas cylinder compound as well as the turning circle which would have been difficult areas without a skilled lighting design team on hand.
AURIGA Stirrup Mounted – Illuminating the walkways of the property, we utilized our stirrup mounted AURIGA luminaires. These luminaires provided an excellent light distribution amongst the paths of the hospital allowing patients and staff safe movement around the site.
Lighting Columns – The columns were alongside the roads surrounding the site both roadside and in car park spaces. By using 6m columns we managed to achieve excellent uniformity and reduce the amount of light spill around the site. We also ensured these columns were finished in RAL 7016 and 7024 to match the surrounding luminaires.
SEMITA Urban – The wall mounted fixture was chosen in RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey finish to help match the building’s exterior. We used 4000K as a colour temperature, but it created a warm illumination when placed near the wooden elements. This gave the illusion of a warm white instead of the neutral white creating a stunning effect.
CLIMATE Extra – Placed above the ambulance bays and the bicycle shelter, we used our weatherproof linear emergency luminaires. These provided excellent illumination for the area and ensured the areas were always fully operational.
PLATINUM Downlights – These recessed luminaires provided excellent illumination to the canopies above the main entrance as well as the accident and emergency unit. Their body is also designed to provide thermal control, so it resulted in less heat wastage for the site.
Overall Badenoch and Strathspey Community Hospital now have a state-of-the-art building that has an efficient lighting solution and can accommodate many patients and services.
