Barton Turns Marina

Staffordshire

Kingfisher Lighting has been involved in the remarkable development of Barton Turns Marina, a project which has transformed a disused quarry into a prestigious marina development centred around the Waterfront Restaurant and is set in over 85 acres of woodland.

Since the first canal boat entered the newly developed Barton Turns Marina in August 2000, the development has been non stop. The first major phase of this stunning retail and leisure development was completed in late 2013.

The development is centred around the Waterfront Restaurant and a number of prestigious retail concessions, along with extensive car parking and landscaping.

The appointed main contractors were Multibuild who in turn appointed C A Sothers as the main M&E contractor for the development.

Via C A Sothers, Kingfisher Lighting were invited to prepare a lighting scheme and luminaire schedule for the entire development including lighting the main approach road to the development, all the car park areas, lighting the pathways running throughout main complex and arterial pathways to the future development area, feature bridge lighting, façade lighting of the Waterfront and lighting of the promenade running along the water’s edge.

A team of experienced and trained lighting engineers using AGI-32 incorporated the architectural blue print for the development and overlaid the resulting lighting scheme, ensuring an accurate representation. Given the investment being made in the development and to support the planning application, Kingfisher also prepared a full 3D visualisation of the scheme presenting the client and planners with the opportunity to gain a realistic perspective of the proposed lighting scheme.

To complement the traditional architectural design of the buildings, Kingfisher designed the lighting of the Promenade immediately in front of the Waterfront Restaurant and retail units with Firenze luminaires complemented by a nautical themed cast iron bollard along the water’s edge.

Façade lighting of the Waterfront Restaurant and the Clock Tower utilised white LED Uplighters, whilst the retails units were highlighted via the use of LED Uplighters with a blue colour filter, both of which had a 180mm diameter. A walk through under the centrally located Clock Tower leading to the Promenade was illuminated with recessed 42W PL Uplighters (260mm) and 35W/70W recessed downlight with a 190mm diameter.

The main carparks and pathways running through the development continued the traditional architectural design with the use of REVELAMPE, a traditionally styled amenity luminaire mounted on 5m lighting columns with a swan neck bracket and decorated with a traditional column embellishment kit. Lighting levels of the main car parks were specified to 20 Lux and utilised a metal halide light source.

The development of the marina is continuing, with the final stage involving the construction of an eighty bedroom hotel and conference facility.
